Welcome to Mindset Breath

An End-of-Year Orientation

Welcome to Mindset Breath

“All language is but a poor translation.” Franz Kafka
“It is not that the meaning cannot be explained. But there are certain meanings that are lost forever the moment they are explained in words.” Haruki Murakami

I’ve been sitting with those two lines for a while. I keep searching for fundamentals. In one of life’s many ironies, my graduate study was in linguistics. I was researching human meaning-making and how that is distributed across speech and gesture.

Language was more fundamental than the complex processes in the industrial estate. Now, my work and processes do not “behave themselves” or even translate easily in language.

The breath changes first. Meaning comes later, if at all.

Still, words are technology and one way we find each other and stay connected. So consider this an attempt, human, imperfect, end-of-year appropriate, a ‘come on in’ gesture to Mindset Breath.

The Context Before the Work

At some point, I figured out that breathing was a way to set the mindbody, but even me, a non-marketer, knew that wasn’t a name. So I sifted and sorted until Mindset Breath emerged. Before that, I called my practice Radical Breathing - radical as in from the root, and that’s true, but I needed something more spacious to carry the work and the movement I’m building.

Our nervous systems, exquisitely designed for rhythm, cycles, and recovery, never evolved to process this much input, this continuously. I work with very competent, very capable, very smart people who can feel they’re “failing at life,” when they’re responding normally to an abnormal load.

A fact that never fails to stagger me: In terms of pure data consumption, we’re now exposed to as much information in a single day as someone in the 15th century would have encountered in their entire lifetime.

It’s not a neutral fact.

I know this intimately. This year taught me what it means to build something while my own system was signalling for rest. I’ve been learning the difference between collapsing under pressure, developing the capacity to keep working even when it’s hard and knowing my limits. Those distinctions matter.

The People I Work With

I work with high-performers. Leaders, founders, creatives, professionals. Often women. The emotionally intelligent, deeply capable ones everyone else leans on. Many labelled gifted as children, often eldest daughters.

They’ve done the work. Therapy, coaching, books, practices, mindset shifts. And yet… Something keeps tightening. Or buzzing. Going flat or feeling stuck. Anxiety that appears without a clear cause. Burnout that doesn’t quite resolve. A sense of being braced, even on good days.

Their nervous systems are just doing their best with the conditions they’re in. Like ducks on a pond: serene above the surface, paddling furiously beneath just to stay in place.

What Mindset Breath Actually Is

Mindset Breath exists because insight alone doesn’t regulate a body. Many of the strategies that keep us stuck have origins in our unconscious, and most modern solutions ask us to override sensation rather than listen to it.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.
— Rumi

This work lives at the exquisite intersection of strategic breathwork, somatic principles, and embodied living. It’s not wellness theatre. It’s not spiritual bypass. We’re not pretending you can sit on a cushion for an hour when you have seventeen unread messages and an inbox seventeen thousand deep.

This is a way to meet your body where it already is, maybe frantic, maybe frozen, and gently guide it, first to stabilisation, regulation, flexibility and then towards capacity.

Add Breath.

You are not broken. (Sometimes simply acknowledging that brings a sense of relief.) You’re operating in environments (boardrooms, back-to-back Zooms, Sunday scaries) designed with little to no regard for a human nervous system.

Why Breathwork and Somatics

Most people try to solve nervous system problems from the neck up. They reframe, rationalise, push through. I did that for years. Breathwork and somatic work changed everything for me: The body knows before the head-brain does.

I firmly believe that breath is the first and principal somatic practice.

Kafka and Murakami nod in agreement here. That tension in your shoulders, that shallow breath, that knot in your stomach - that’s the original text. It’s meaning - held in tissue and sensation. Words about it are the necessary, albeit often clumsy, translation.

Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
— Genesis 2:7

I’ve spent this last handful of years in training - breathwork first and now Somatic Experiencing - learning to notice, then track and (finally!) understand what my body was saying before my mind could explain it. When I had shingles mid-year, right after a period of high visibility, my nervous system was saying: you cannot keep offering this work while refusing to receive care yourself.

Breathwork gives us a direct line back to the ‘original text.’ Breath changes first. Before the mind knows, breath, in the body, responds. It allows communication with, in, the body for a kind of somatic alchemy.

Relief without dissociation. Actual power that’s not productivity porn and that doesn’t demand collapse.

The Frameworks (Maps, Not Mandates)

I’ve distilled this into ways to orient ourselves from the inside out.

The F-State Map™

A somatic look at survival responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze, Flop, Fawn.

This year I had a major shift when I realised “I’m an adult now” (it’s only taken decades)…I can change my state. I can impact my circumstances. I’m not helpless. That’s what this map makes possible, the discernment to know which state you’re in, what a state needs and how to shift toward regulation.

Breath is a Governor™

You choose how you breathe in the moment - in a meeting, in conflict, in exhaustion - based on what your system actually needs.

You don’t regulate once. You govern continuously.

The A.L.I.V.E. System™

A body-first roadmap back to yourself:

Awareness → Link to the Body → Internal Regulation → Vital Expression → Embodied Expansion.

It’s not linear. We cycle through again and again. Life lives and moves in spirals - from DNA to galaxies.

Where This Is All Headed: Alivefullness™

Alivefullness is embodied vitality.

It’s what becomes possible when your nervous system is no longer stuck negotiating survival.

The goal is to be fully, messily human while you do extraordinary things. You can feel deeply and still function. Rest without guilt. Lead without pretending you’re invincible.

“There are years that ask questions and years that answer.”
— Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God

This 2025 asked hard questions. Haaaaard questions. I didn’t collapse. I didn’t crumble. I practised having more capacity and more flexibility. I kept working, kept showing up, kept building. This year was about me taking the medicine I’ve made. It was Alivefullness in practice: being able to hold complexity and challenge without losing myself in it.

Why I Do This Work

This work exists because insight alone doesn’t regulate a body. You can understand why you feel the way you do and do the things that keep you in the place to still feel it.

I’m building this because I needed it. Because I’ve been the good girl who did “everything right” and still felt frozen. Who didn’t even realise I was running patterns and then understood some intellectually, but couldn’t shift them.

I needed to learn to work with my body, not around it.

The people I serve are often high-achieving women who are successful at work but internally overwhelmed. Often in perimenopause, looking at lives of doing everything right and wondering, “Is this it?” “This?”

We’ve done the therapy, read the books, tried the mindset work, and still feel like something’s missing.

This work exists to give needed tools in situ. Strategy and practices that meet your nervous system where it actually is, that work in real time, in the middle of your actual life.

If You’re New Here

Just notice.

If you’re capable but tired of managing yourself…
If you’re stuck or going in circles…
If you understand your patterns but can’t shift them…
If you want both relief and agency, power and presence…

This work may be for you.

I’m still learning this too. I’m learning to show up in order to know myself, to be visible while still becoming, to let my capacity generate resources instead of just building more capacity in private. I’m learning that allowing fun and pleasure is what keeps the work sustainable.

This Substack is where I share reflections, practices, and orientations. Not to give you another thing to strive or optimise for, but to help your system remember what it already knows.

The most strategic thing you can do for your work, your leadership, your life? Learn to work with yourself (starting with your nervous system).

That’s what we do here.

Exhale. Let the body lead. Stay if it feels right.
